“You know, I tried to run, too,” Bill said. “That day, that’s what I was trying to do. I thought that if I just took her and ran away then we would be fine. But instead it got so much worse and now I’m here. Nothing good comes from running.”
“I’d be careful,” Tom begged. “We won’t get caught; I’ll make sure of it.”
Bill let his eyes slip closed for a couple of seconds before he said, “I don’t want to fight with you,” he admitted, exhausted. “I’m here. I’m here right now. Can’t we just…” He put his hands on Tom’s naked shoulders and their eyes met, foreheads still pressed together. “Don’t be like this. I…” He cursed inwardly at what he was about to say. “Damn it. I need you.”
Tom was looking at him like Bill had said something entirely different than what he had actually said, like he had told him there was a unicorn standing behind him or something.
“I need you, too.”
